Program Description
This interdisciplinary workforce education and training certificate program provides generalist-level education in aging, public health and palliative care, including geriatrics, gerontology, social work, psychology, health policy and advocacy, and pastoral and spiritual care. The overarching framework of this virtual course offering is public health and palliative care, orienting the learning experience to the contexts and challenges presented by serious or chronic illness and death or dying, as well as pandemics, disasters, migration, and humanitarian crises. The course aims to build knowledge, capacity and generalist-level skills for those working in the aging, health and social services fields, and provides a foundational curriculum in the following knowledge areas:
- Social Policy and the Law
- Ethics and Bioethics
- Social Work, Psychological and Community-based Research and Research Methods
- Palliative Care and Geriatrics
- Community-based Services
- Humanism
Certificate
Non-credit bearing and non-NYS DOE-approved program; certificate documents completion and satisfaction of educational requirements of the program
Continuing Education Credits
CE credits are available for licensed social workers (LMSW/LCSW) in New York State from Lifespan of Greater Rochester. Lifespan of Greater Rochester is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0089.

Requirements
- Regular attendance at all sessions (exceptions can be made with prior approval),
- Active participation in dialogues, and
- Completion of a capstone project to earn the certificate

Pedagogical Modalities
- Plenary lectures and panels: Common foundations
- Discussions and participant presentations
- Small groups: In-depth reading, discussion of case-studies
- Asynchronous individual mentoring (Oxford model): Individualized study and project development/execution

Attendance Policy
With the goal of building knowledge and capacity in each of the topic areas, this program requires attendance at all sessions. Creation of rich discussion between faculty and program participants is dependent upon regular attendance. Absences may occur due to life situations and can be approved on an individual basis.
