University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Policies

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) has updated and revised important medical student policies. Students, residents and faculty should beMeliora aware of these policies to optimize the learning environment. Policies and Procedures are located, in full, in the URSMD student handbook.

LCME Accreditation

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) granted the medical education program full accreditation through 2032. The program was "compliant" (the highest rating possible) in all 12 standards—a testament to the high-quality education our students receive. "I'm extremely proud of the wonderful work of program leaders, faculty, staff, and students under the leadership of former Dean Mark Taubman, whose collective commitment led to this success," said SMD Dean and URMC CEO David Linehan.

Student News

Class of 2024 Match Results

 

From Rochester's class of 2024, 30 students will stay at the University of Rochester Medical Center for their residency training (the same as last year) and the others will go elsewhere. The majority are staying in New York state (42) followed next by Pennsylvania (7), then California (5), and the rest of the 2024 graduates will be in 26 other states including the District of Columbia. Overall, UR SMD students pursuing residency training were placed in 23 different specialties, with the largest concentrations in Internal Medicine (15), Psychiatry (10), Family Medicine (8) and Pediatrics (7).

Alpha Omega Alpha Class of 2024

 

Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), founded in 1902, is the national medical honor society. Dedicated to the belief that in the profession of medicine we will improve care for all by recognizing high educational achievement, honoring gifted teaching, encouraging the development of leaders along with supporting the ideals of humanism while promoting service to others.

Election to Alpha Omega Alpha is an honor signifying a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service. A lifelong honor, membership in the society confers recognition for a physician's dedication to the profession and art of healing.

Congratulations

 

Tony Guo was recently awarded a Sarnoff Fellowship which is a funded year out research program to develop leaders in cardiovascular innovation, research and medicine. Less than 20 are awarded each year. As you recall, George Olverson is completing a Sarnoff this academic year.

Mackenzie Palmer has been awarded a 2024 STFM Foundation Student Scholarship from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) to participate in the 2024 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education

Jayesh Menon was awarded the Melanoma Research Foundation Medical Student Research Grant Award. The award promotes research opportunities to medical students early in their careers by funding clinical or laboratory-based research projects focused on better understanding the prevention, early detection, behaviors that impact melanoma risk, biology and treatment of melanoma, including cutaneous, ocular, mucosal, pediatric, etc.

Alex Schick was elected the American MWA (AMWA) National Region 2 Director for all medical schools in NY and NJ for the 2024-25 year. Her responsibilities include hosting the regional meeting/conference.

Kadiatou Traore was accepted into the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program Student. She will do a mentored epidemiology research project on the main NIH campus in Bethesda.

Isabella Zappi received the 2024 College of American Pathologists (CAP) Distinguished Medical Student Award. The Distinguished Medical Student Award from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) is given to a medical student, in any year of training, for outstanding achievement, aptitude, or interest in pathology.

Giving Feedback

The following videos, prepared by the Committee on Media Creation for Giving Effective Feedback at URSMD, provide a resource for faculty, residents, preceptors, small group leaders, and tutors in giving feedback to students. 

Teaching Opportunities at URSMD

There are many opportunities to teach medical students at URSMD. Different formats and options include:

  • Clinical teaching in the clerkships
  • Small Group teaching
  • Serving as a Problem Based Learning tutor
  • Serving as preceptor for Phase 1 and Phase 2 medical students in primary care offices.
