RPRC:NCDHR completed a survey called the Deaf Health Survey 2013. Watch the video below to learn more about the survey and a little about the history of RPRC:NCDHR.

FAQs

What is the Deaf Health Survey 2013?
The Deaf Health Survey is RPRC:NCDHR’s newest completed survey. We did the Deaf Health Survey 2008 and wanted to compare that information to the data we found in the 2013-2014 Deaf Health Survey. The DHS 2013 had general health questions and also specific health-related questions that mirrored the Telephone Surveys done by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This survey was separate from surveys used for Deaf Weight Wise or other ongoing projects. We started collecting this survey data in September 2013, and closed the survey in the summer of 2014.
Why is it important to take surveys like the Deaf Health Survey?
The CDC and Monroe County Department of Health have done surveys with the general population through the phone. Deaf people are not included in this data! We need deaf people to participate in surveys like this to assist RPRC:NCDHR with proposing new projects. The Deaf Health Survey 2008 helped us develop projects such as Deaf Weight Wise (DWW). The Deaf Health Survey 2013 will help us develop research projects for the future, focusing on health concerns in the Rochester Deaf Community.
How long did it take?
It took participants a range of time from 20 minutes to an hour. This was because the Deaf Health Survey was conducted in American Sign Language (ASL) video with English support. Some participants decided to watch the signing videos; some decided to focus on the written questions.
Where was the survey administered?
The RPRC:NCDHR attended several community events, taking appointment times and hosting the survey. The RPRC:NCDHR also made appointments to meet participants in public places and sometimes at their homes. Some events were held at the Saunders Research Building as well.
