Programmatic Grants

As the Center for Musculoskeletal Research (CMSR) has grown since its inception in 2000, a key component of the strategic plan has been to compliment the strong record of R01 funding earned by faculty with synergistic programmatic supports. This strategic initiative had its first successes in 2003 with Program Project-level funding to study Pb toxicity in the skeleton (P01 to Dr. Edward Puzas) and in 2006 to understand the molecular pathways that are potential therapeutic targets in the context of skeletal trauma (P50 in 2006 to Dr. Randy Rosier, renewed in 2012 to Dr. Regis J. O'Keefe). Drs. Edward Schwarz, Hani Awad, Jack Daiss, and Stephen Kates initiated two parallel programs on diagnostics and treatments for bone infection, which are still ongoing.  The first was funded as the AOTrauma Clinical Priory Program in 2012, and the second is a NIH-funded P50 CORT on the Osteoimmunology of Bone Infection, which was funded in 2017. Dating back to 2006, the CMSR has been home to a formal T32-supported training program, originally directed by Dr. Regis O’Keefe and then Dr. Michael Zuscik, which aims to provide a comprehensive didactic and research education as well as career development mentoring to future scientists in the musculoskeletal field. In 2020, the training program was rejuvenated and rebranded as the "Rochester Musculoskeletal (ROCMSK) Training Program” with the support of a T32 grant award (T32AR076950) from NIAMS and significant support from the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. This new T32 program is directed by Drs. Hani Awad, Laura Calvi, and Alayna Loiselle.
