Highland Hospital

Highland Hospital

Highland Hospital is a 268-bed community hospital which emphasizes primary care and friendly, personalized service. Over 3000 deliveries take place annually at Highland’s Family Maternity Center. All patients are considered “teaching” patients. Currently we have 30 board certified obstetricians and 8 family physicians who conduct their private practices at Highland, in addition to the Family Medicine faculty and resident practices. A full-time perinatologist is available for consultation and teaching and a sonographer is on the unit during weekdays. Highland Hospital serves patients who deliver at 34 weeks gestational age and greater, although triage provides care to patients at all gestational ages. The cesarean delivery rate is about 23.2%. The maternity service is staffed jointly by Family Medicine residents and OB-GYN residents, who have a long tradition of mutual respect and collaboration.

Located a short distance from the hospital, Highland Family Medicine, the safety-net clinic of Highland Hospital, provides full spectrum care for over 26,000 patients, averaging 70,000 patient visits per year. Approximately half of the clinic’s patients are Medicaid eligible. Highland patients are diverse: 38% are African American, 6% are Asian and 6% identify as Latinx. Rochester is home to a large community of hard of hearing individuals, many of whom receive their medical care through HFM. Multiple languages are spoke by HFM patients and interpreter services are readily available, both in-person and through telephone or video interpretation. With eight teams of faculty and resident physicians, NPs, RNs and LPNs, pharmacists, family therapists and psychologists, fellows will learn in a setting that emphasizes interdisciplinary team-based care. Fellows will have the chance to work with chronic disease and depression care managers, and participate in group visits such as the Centering Pregnancy program. Highland Family Medicine has been recognized by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education as a national exemplar for training in team-based care and is NCQA PCMH certified.
