Advanced Degrees During Fellowship

Obtaining an advanced degree is not a requirement for those choosing a clinical pathway, but is part of the Breastfeeding & Lactation Medicine Fellowship for the academic pathway. However, coursework is encouraged even if the fellow is not planning for an advanced degree to complement and enhance the research year education.

• For those with a strong interest in a research career, a variety of master’s programs, certificate programs, and Ph.D. programs can be obtained during the fellowship through the graduate schools at the University of Rochester.
• For those entering fellowship with a masters prior to matriculation, there is a new Ph.D. program in Translational Biomedical Science, which is developing a new type of investigator prepared for the challenges of medicine in an increasingly complex environment. This program can easily nest into the fellowship for those with an interest in this area.
• For those with an interest in education, there is both a masters in health professions education as well as a Ph.D. Although housed in the Warner School, this is a joint program of the Warner School with the School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Options include a masters in Health professions education, as well as Advanced Certificates in Online Teaching or in Program Evaluation. Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs are also available.

All advanced degree courses require significant planning to assure that these fit and work into the fellowship structure. Planned coursework and discussions around degrees should be initiated early on with the fellowship director, and will require separate application and acceptance into these programs of study.
