Wilmot Cancer Institute and UR Medicine offer a number of services that may help patients and families. A , and you can find a list of resources available in the community here. Some resources are outlined below, and we are also happy to connect you with local and national organizations focused on your needs. Support groups

Wilmot hosts many support groups for survivors of various types of cancer. We can also help you to find other support groups that are available throughout the area.

Physical Fitness and Exercise

Regular physical activity can help cancer survivors in many ways, such as reducing fatigue, managing stress, losing weight and improving sleep quality.

Through the Pluta Integrative Oncology & Wellness Center, all Wilmot Cancer Institute patients seen at any location have access to the ReNEW exercise program, yoga and qi gong, and other movement-based classes and resources. Some classes have the option to be in person or virtual through Zoom. These resources are available at no charge to patients, thanks to support from the Pluta Cancer Foundation.

Outside URMC, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment or disease.

Nutrition

Eating well can help you to recover from cancer and your cancer treatment. Good nutrition can also reduce the risk for certain diseases, while helping you to feel better and maintain a healthy weight.

Any Wilmot patient can arrange for a free consultation with a Wilmot registered dietitian who’s certified in oncology nutrition. For an appointment, call (585) 275-5823 or speak with your oncology team.

The Pluta Integrative Oncology & Wellness Center offers therapies to complement cancer treatment, including healthy cooking education and nutrition lectures. These services are available to patients seen at any Wilmot Cancer Institute location at no charge to the patient, thanks to support from the Pluta Cancer Foundation. Tobacco Cessation

Research shows patients with cancer who use tobacco tend to have worse outcomes than those who do not use tobacco or who are able to quit. However, quitting is not easy, especially while also dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Wilmot Cancer Institute offers resources to help:

  • Smokefree.gov, which provides free, accurate, evidence-based information and professional assistance to help support the immediate and long-term needs of people trying to quit smoking. 
  • New York State Smokers’ Quitline, which is a free and confidential service that provides effective stop-smoking services to New Yorkers who want to stop smoking.

Integrative Oncology

The Pluta Integrative Oncology & Wellness Center offers services that research has shown to help reduce symptoms, ease anxiety, and improve overall well-being during and after treatment. Services include massage, yoga, art therapy, and meditation, and more. Patients should talk with their oncology team to be referred, and may request an Integrative Oncology consult to determine which practices may be best for them. Spirituality

The Chaplaincy services at the Wilmot Cancer Center provide compassionate spiritual and emotional support to patients and families of all faiths. To contact a chaplain, call (585) 275-2187 or ask your oncology care team to help you in contacting them.
