ASCO Internship Curriculum and Schedule Overview
Participants should plan to be local to their medical school campus for the duration of the OSI and fully available for internship activities between Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the clinical internship dates of July 15 to August 9, 2024. Additionally, there is an in-person orientation at the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL, for which participants will receive a travel stipend.
Orientation Activities
- 4-6 hours of Asynchronous Learning Activities | Self-Paced, Online in May 2024
- Students participate in asynchronous, virtual ASCO Modules on foundational oncology topics on their own time in the weeks leading up to the ASCO Annual Meeting Orientation Session.
- OSI Orientation Session | Morning of Sunday, June 2, 2024 in Chicago, IL
- Students attend the OSI Orientation Session on the morning of Sunday, June 2, at the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.
- During the orientation, students will connect with their sites and the national OSI cohorts and discuss foundational oncology concepts to prepare for clinical shadowing.
- Students will receive a $1,500 stipend to attend the orientation and free registration to the ASCO Annual Meeting.
- Students can elect to attend the full ASCO Annual Meeting, but attendance is only required for the orientation on Sunday, June 2.
Weekly Activities During Clinical Internship
Between July 15 and August 9, 2024, participants should be available for the weekly internship activities Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.
- Clinical Shadowing:
- Monday – Friday; full day
- Students will be able to interact with oncologists and their patients in outpatient clinics, research labs, operating rooms, pathology and radiology labs, and in-patient hospital settings.
- Weekly Networking Events:
- 1-2x per week, informal events help participants connect with oncologists at their institution.
- Events will include two social events and four networking meals.
- Events will be scheduled by your institution Monday – Friday.
Post-Program Virtual Mentoring
In the months following the OSI, ASCO will provide virtual mentoring and networking opportunities to continue exploring your oncology interests and building your network in oncology.
- Two virtual sessions: Mentorship & Research in Oncology
- Two topical mentoring meetings: students select a mentor to meet with for a 30-minute career conversation to ask questions and seek advice based on their training/career goals.
