Training Experiences

The Adult Psychology fellowship teaches trainees the needed skills to practice person-centered care in dynamic, fast-paced acute psychiatry settings. The fellow will gain a variety of experiences aimed at increasing their skills for: a) direct patient care with patients presenting with acute exacerbations of their mental health concerns, b) teaching and supervisions. The fellow will also participate in seminars that help hone their clinical, collaborative, academic, and administrative skills.
Visit our Cross-Track Learning Activities page for more information.

Intensive supervision is provided for the fellow's clinical work, including a minimum of two hours of weekly individual supervision from licensed clinical psychologists plus group supervision as appropriate.

The Adult Psychology fellow will provide clinical care on the Adult and Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatry Units at Strong Memorial Hospital. The service consists of 56 patient beds across three units, offering specialized care to adults ages 18+ presenting with a variety of acute psychiatric needs, such as: acute suicidal or homicidal ideation, psychotic symptoms, severe emotional or behavioral dysregulation, difficulty completing ADLs, acute manic symptoms, and substance use. The fellow will work closely with several multidisciplinary teams consisting of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, recreation therapists, creative arts counselor, and psychiatric technicians. The fellow will provide direct clinical care on the Adult and Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatry Units, including eclectic individual and group therapy across the units, and intensive individual therapy with those patients participating in the Intensive Therapy Pathway (ITP). Some opportunities for family-based therapeutic intervention may be available as well.
