Fourth Year Acting Internship in Pediatrics

Description: The pediatric acting internship is a broadly based experience, which allows students to assume primary responsibility for patients under the direct supervision of second- or third-year residents and attendings. Acting interns are assigned to any one of the primary floor teams at Golisano Children's Hospital (Various inpatient units: infant, toddler and pre-school age; school age; adolescent; hematology/oncology; Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) or Rochester General Hospital (B7 Children's Unit).
Goal
The pediatric acting internship is a clinically-based experience, which allows students to assume primary responsibility for patients under the direct supervision of second- or third year residents and attendings.
Learning Objectives
- Will function as a Pediatrics intern under the direct supervision of senior level residents and faculty.
- Formulate accurate assessments to inform appropriate clinical management plans
- Enhance interviewing, examination, and clinical reasoning skills
- Understand the impact of family, community, and society on children’s health
- Learn strategies for promoting health and preventing disease
- Deepen understanding of age-appropriate physical and psychosocial development
- Improve oral and written communication with patients and families

Acting interns will have opportunities to develop their skills at communication with patients, families, staff and referring physicians. On-call schedules and patient care assignments are made in rotation with first year residents. Acting interns are fully integrated into departmental rounds and teaching conferences with residents.
