Valerie Garrison, a former member of our outreach team, has taken a position as Healthy Start Project Director with Healthy Baby Network (http://www.pnmc-hsr.org/).  Healthy Start is a Federally funded program which works to prevent infant mortality in 87 communities with infant mortality rates at least 1.5 times the national average and high rates of low birthweight, preterm birth, maternal mortality and maternal morbidity. We wish Valerie all the best in her new position!

Mission Statement

MotherToBaby UR Medicine is a service of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry, in Rochester, New York staffed by Teratologists, Pharmacologists/ Toxicologists, Pharmacists, Obstetricians and Pediatricians who specialize in prenatal exposures and breastfeeding.

History of MotherToBaby

MotherToBaby UR Medicine was developed to meet the needs of women who are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant, or are currently breastfeeding, their families, and their health care providers. We receive calls from around the world concerning therapeutic, environmental, and occupational exposures for women, with a focus on women living in New York State, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania.

Since 1987, Dr. Richard K. Miller has directed the service. Dr. Ruth Lawrence joined the service in 1995 and Norma Barton joined in 2003. Today, affiliates around the world provide the most cutting-edge and up-to-date information about medications, chemicals, herbal products, illicit drugs, alcohol, diseases, environmental and occupational exposures, and much more during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. MotherToBaby UR Medicine is affiliated with the Finger Lakes Children's Environmental Health Center as well as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Research and Outreach

Study addressing issues to provide services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community

We are seeking mothers who are pregnant or have recently delivered and are breastfeeding to participate in a Focus Group on how to better provide services to these mothers and families. You would be asked to participate in a two (2) hour meeting.
