Specialized Fetal Procedures

In rare circumstances, some babies need surgical procedures inside the womb. Our expert team is specialized in determining conditions that may benefit from these procedures, and assuring timely referral to a fetal care center. Improved fetal imaging and diagnostic tools have allowed us to more precisely identify when conditions worsen, allowing us to follow many of these locally, and make sure that families only need to travel when interventions are needed. Additionally, most women who undergo fetal interventions at referral centers can then return to our care for close follow-up and for delivery at UR Medicine’s Golisano Children’s Hospital. 

Our Maternal-Fetal physicians perform some fetal procedures locally including: 

• Fetal blood sampling and transfusion
• Fetal bladder drainage
• Fetal cyst drainage
• Fetal shunt placement
