Nuchal Translucency and Nasal Bone Assessments

Ultrasound image showing babyMeasurement of the Nuchal Translucency (NT) is part of a first trimester risk assessment for genetic conditions. The NT is the fluid at the back of the fetal neck and is measured between 11 - 14 weeks. When combined with blood work, this testing (called a first trimester screen) can help assess the risk the fetus has certain genetic conditions. Additionally, thicknesses in this area have been associated with other fetal abnormalities, including genetic disorders, cardiac conditions, and diaphragmatic hernia.

The importance of accuracy and quality monitoring for NT measurement is well established in literature and even being slightly off in the measurement can significantly alter risk. Our team of sonographers have all received NTQR certification for both NT and nasal bone assessment, assuring that you receive the most accurate information possible.

What Is NTQR?

Nuchal Translucency Quality Review (NTQR) Program is an educational program through the Perinatal Quality Foundation (a national, independent, non-profit organization), designed to assure accurate measurement and interpretation of this critical NT measurement used in the assessment of genetic risk as well as accurate assessment of nasal bone.

The program consists of lectures, examinations, and image review to receive initial certification. The program then tracks all measurements from each sonographer and physician, which are reviewed quarterly to assure they remain in range and of high quality.
