IM Program Timeline

Dr. McCann served as chair and program director from 1926 until 1957, when Dr. Larry Young assumed both of these roles.  Dr. Young remained chair until 1974, and was the program director until Dr. Bill Morgan assumed the role in 1962.  Upon stepping down as the chair in 1974, Dr. Young officially created both the Med-Peds Program and the Associated Hospitals Program.  Dr. Young served as the program director of both AHP and MP until 1978, then handing the AHP program to Dr. Rudy Napodano and handing the MP Program to a combination of Dr. Rudy Napodano (for IM) and the Chair of Pediatrics, Dr. David Smith (for Pediatrics.  Dr. Barbara Schuster took the helm of the MP program in 1982.  Dr. Bill Morgan continued as Internal Medicine residency director from 1962 – 1989 before handing the reins over to Dr. Bob Betts from 1989-1997.  Dr. Donald Bordley assumed the role of PD in 1997 until Dr. Alec O’Connor’s term began in 2012.  Quite recently, the IM residency program has named its first female program director, Dr. Amy Blatt in 2022.

The three residency programs each continued quite successfully, collaborating on shared rotations and teaching conferences.  The AHP officially became the PCPIM in 1985.  Dr. Napodano continued the directorship until Dr. Schuster assumed the role of program director of the PCPIM in 1993 and continued as the MP program director until relinquishing both roles in 1995.  Dr. Schuster then becoming the only female chair of medicine in the nation at the time at Wright State University.  Dr. Craig Kaplan became PD of the PCPIM in 1995, and served in that role until it officially closed in 2001.  Dr. Lynn Garfunkel, a pediatrician, became interim PD of the MP program in 1995 and served in this role until Dr. Brett Robbins assumed the role in 1999 as the first dually boarded program director.  Dr. Robbins continues in this role today, 23 years later.
