Research
In collaboration with other Departments at the University of Rochester Medical Center, the Department of Medicine is developing multiple programs to integrate and maximize career development of physician scientists across the career continuum. Physician-scientists bring a unique perspective to the practice of medicine providing a critical bridge between the bench and the bedside. A major goal of our program is to increase the number and diversity of successful physician researchers and promote the career goals of interested trainees and junior faculty.
Grant Submission Reviews
The Department is linked with forums for pre-review of grant applications including the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). We have also developed a ‘K-club’ with the Department of Pediatrics as a forum for review and discussion of mentored grants prior to submission. These monthly meetings also include skills-based sessions on grant writing, career development plans, and other topics.
UR Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)
- The UR CTSI offers a core curriculum for senior instructors and assistant professors which is designed to identify the skills they need for more successful career advancement.
- Junior faculty whose primary academic focus is research can participate in the UR CTSI Career Development Program (KL2) Faculty Scholars Award which provides 2 years of support for the early career development of multidisciplinary clinical and translational scientists. The goal of the program is to promote the successful transition of KL2 scholars to an independent career as a clinical and translational investigator, generally by means of an individual K or R award.

Mentoring Programs for Trainees
The Physician Scientist Training Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center is an American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Research Pathway for highly motivated trainees preparing for an independent research intensive career in academic medicine. This program provides 3 years of protected research time after completion of 2 years of internal medicine residency and requisite fellowship training. The program is designed to provide unparalleled training and mentorship for physician scientists. Guidance and infrastructure is provided for grant applications including NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP), F grants and mentored K grants and sessions on career development. This program exists to support a robust pool of physician-scientists that will become faculty here and at other leading academic medical centers.
