Educational Materials
The FIPP team knows healthcare providers are busy. We have done some legwork and compiled a list of resources for you, your patients, and their families. We have reviewed these websites to provide reliable and current firearm safety information.
How to Counsel
The first two resources come from the University of California at Davis-based BulletPoints Project. This website provides a wealth of information, tools, handouts, and videos on the topic of firearms and their intersection with health care.
How to Counsel - talking with patients about firearms.
Clinical Scenarios – information about who is at risk for firearm injury and ways to address it.
Safe Storage of Firearms Videos - examples of counseling videos from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Firearms and Firearm Storage Information
Many health care providers are uncomfortable counseling patients about firearms because they are unfamiliar with guns.
These videos are presented by clinicians demonstrating different firearm types, explaining how they work, how they may be used, and highlighting safe storage methods.
In addition to the videos, BeSMART provides an online guide to secure firearm storage devices with the breakdown of the different storage options and the cost range for each.
