FIPP Co-Presents with Lifespan about Firearm Safety and Dementia

FIPP Co-directors, Jennifer West, PhD, and Corey Nichols-Hadeed, JD, joined Lifespan staff to present Firearm Safety and Dementia, Part 1: Destigmatizing Crucial Conversations. The webinar was attended by staff from New York State Office for the Aging, Children and Family Services, and Adult Protective Services as well as civil attorneys, community aging service providers, domestic violence service provider and URMS clinicians. Lifespan is a not-for-profit agency that provides information, resources and services to older adults and caregivers in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The webinar was part of Lifespan Health’s Financial Exploitation Webinar Series for Professionals.
Firearm Injury Prevention Training for Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Clinicians

FIPP Co-directors, Jennifer West, PhD, and Corey Nichols-Hadeed, JD, presented Firearm Injury Prevention for Health Care Providers training to the Department of Psychiatry’s Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization clinicians. The training taught participants the role secure firearm storage plays in preventing suicide, unintentional injury, and death (with an emphasis on issues affecting children and their families); how to identify the different types of secure firearm storage as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each; and how to have productive conversations with their patients (and their families) about the importance of secure firearm storage.
FIPP Joins Injury Free Kids Coalition for National Injury Prevention Day Fair

The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester and URMC Kessler Trauma Center hosted an Injury Prevention Fair in recognition of National Injury Prevention Day. The fair was held on 11/17/24 at Eastview Mall from 12:00 -3:00 p.m. and featured a wide variety of vendors providing information about injury prevention (poison control, fire department, audiologists, etc.). The FIP program provided information and resources about secure firearm storage and distributed free cable gun locks.

On September, 20th, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., the FIPP team participated in Strong Recovery's Health & Wellness fair in celebration of Recovery Month! The team was joined by the Injury Free Kids Coaltion and provided information and resources about secure firearm storage.

The webinar showcased how improving firearm storage practices can prevent unintentional firearm injury and death and how clinicians can have productive conversations with their patients (and their families) about the importance of secure firearm storage.

FIPP co-directors Corey Nichols-Hadeed, JD, will present Addressing Community Violence: Resources at URMC and Community Agency Collaboration to Emergency Medicine staff. Joining Ms. Nichols are Wanda Ridgeway, Executive Director of Rise Up Rochester, and Keyvo Owens, Program Coordinator for the Community Engagement to Reduce Victimization program (CERV). Rise Up and CERV provide firearm violence intervention and prevention services to survivors and their families.

FIPP Team Educates and Provides Resources During Gun Violence Awareness Month

The Firearm Injury Prevention Team attended several community and clinic tabling events during June, which was Gun Violence Awareness Month. The team shared information and handouts about the importance of storing firearms safely and securely to prevent unintentional injury, suicide, and firearm theft. Free cable gun locks also were available. The events included:

The poster was presented at the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers biennial conference held in Albuquerque, NM.

FIPP co-director, Jennifer West, PhD, contributed to the poster, Addressing social determinants of health in youth and young adult victims of firearm violence. The poster was presented by co-contributor, Crystal Craig, MD, at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies conference in Toronto, Canada that took place May 2 - 6, 2024. Anne Brayer, MD, and Michael Scharf, MD, also contributed to the poster.

Corey Nichols-Hadeed, JD, Co-Director for the Firarm Injury Preventino Program, was recognized as a leader making a difference in community health. Ms. Nichols-Hadeed was honored for her work in psychiatry exploring the imact of policy and law on health outcomes, with a focus on patient safety across the lifespan. FIPP Team Attends Northwell Health Forum

FIPP Co-directors, Corey Nichols-Hadeed, JD, and Jennifer West, PhD, and Program Manager, Kelly Johnson, virtually attended the annual Northwell Health Gun Violence Prevention Forum. The forum is held annually to bring together Northwell Health’s partners to “form strategic alliances, drive actionable outcomes and elevate the national conversation around [firearm injuries and death] as a public health emergency.”
FIPP Training - Children’s Home Health Service

Jennifer West, PhD, presented to clinicians of the University of Rochester Medical Center's Children's Home Health Service department. The presentation focused on the importance of safe firearm storage in the prevention of unitentional firearm injury and death, and ways clinicians can have effective conversations with patients about storing their firearms safely.
Firearm Injury Prevention Program Presents Educational In-Service about Gun Violence Intervention and Prevention

Corey Nichols, JD, and Jennifer West, PhD, presented an educational in-service to the Strong Memorial Emergency Department Social Workers about the positive impact community agencies have in violence prevention and intervention in Rochester. The presenation featured respresentatives from local community agencies that provide violence prevention, intervention, and survivor services: Rise Up Rochester, Pathways to Peace, and 585 SNUG.
