Jennifer West, PhD featured on WXXI Connections: How to communicate about firearm safety

FIPP co-director, Jennifer West, PhD, was joined by Strong Pediatric Practice pediatrician, Crystal Craig, MD, MPH, and the Strong Pediatric Trauma Program Manager, Adam Oplinger, BS, RN, CEN, TCRN, on WXXI’s radio talk show, Connections with Evan Dawson.
The group discussed the importance of secure firearm storage and highlighted ASK Day, a national effort that takes place each year on June 21 to encourage caregivers to ask about firearms in the spaces where their children spend time.

FIPP Co-director, Jennifer West, PhD, presented Firearm Injury Prevention for Health Care Providers training to a group of the Psychiatry Nursing staff on Tuesday, June 10. The presentation taught participants the role secure firearm storage plays in preventing suicide, unintentional injury, and death; how to identify the different types of secure firearm storage as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each; and how to have productive conversations with their patients (and their families) about the importance of secure firearm storage.

FIPP and Psychiatry Staff Wear Orange in honor of Firearm Violence Awarence

The FIPP team joined Golisano Children's Hospital for their Wear Orange event which took place in the Strong Memorial Hospital lobby on Friday, June 6. Wear Orange is celebrated the first weekend each June to recognize the resilience of firearm violence survivors and the dedication of advocates striving for a safer future. Event guests included community orgnaizations Should Never Use Guns (585 SNUG), Pathways to Peace, Moms Demand Action, and Rochester Spinal Association. These partners shared information and resources around firearm violence prevention, advoacy, and help for survivors of firearm violence.

FIPP co-directors, Jennifer West, PhD, and Corey Nichols, JD, join Lifespan staff and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for the webinar: The Elephant in the Room: Firearm Safety and Dementia.
This panel-style session offers practical guidance on how caregivers can address the growing risks for unintentional and intentional harm for loved ones with dementia who also have access to firearms (including legal and safety considerations).

Good Day Rochester Features Interview Highlighting Wear Orange Day

Wanda Ridgeway, Executive Director of Rise Up Rochester, and Adam Oplinger, University of Rochester Medical Center Pediatric Trauma Program Manager, were guests on WUHF’s Good Day Rochester. The duo spoke about upcoming Wear Orange events to raise awareness about gun violence.
The events both take place on Friday, June 6. Golisano Children's Hospital Wear Orange occurs from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Strong Memorial lobby. Rochester City, Monroe County, and several community agencies later host a Wear Orange event from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Parcel 5 in Rochester. Both events will provide information about preventing gun violence and resources for gun violence survivors. The Parcel 5 event also includes guest appearances by city and county officials, food trucks, activities for kids, and free t-shirts.

FIPP Co-Directors to Present at URMC’s Geriatric Grand Rounds

FIPP Co-Directors, Corey Nichols-Hadeed, JD, and Jennifer West, PhD, will talk to health care providers about secure firearm storage as a modifiable risk factor for unintentional firearm injury and death with an emphasis on issues impacting older adults and their caregivers and families. The presentation will include information about how clinicians can have productive conversations with patients (and their families) about the importance of secure firearm storage.

FIPP's Kelly Johnson attended the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men Health Fair with Jerard Johnson from URMC's Pediatric Health & Wellness. The event took place Saturday, 5/14/25 in Rochester, NY, and provided health care information and resources from a variety of vendors including Common Ground Health, URMC Wilmot Cancer Center, Monroe County Public Health, RIT, and Alzheimer's Association.

The presentation discussed special consideration for firearm secure storage for patients with dementia.

Crystal Craig, MD, MPH, won the Public Health Sciences Emeritus Award at the University of Rochester Public Health Master's graduation ceremony held last Thursday, May 15, 2025. The award is given to the graduating student with an outstanding research project. Dr. Craig's project was titled “The Impact of Child Access Prevention and Safe Storage Law on Youth”. Congratulations on the award and your Master of Public Health degree, Dr. Craig!

The presentation will teach participants the role secure firearm storage plays in preventing suicide, unintentional injury, and death, with an emphasis on issues affecting older adults and their care givers and families. Lifespan is a not-for-profit agency that provides information, resources and services to older adults and caregivers in the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

The poster was presented at the SAVIR Accelerating the Science of Safety annual conference in New York, NY. Other contributors included Anne Brayer, MD, Michael Scharf, MD, and Crystal Craig, MD, who presented the poster at the conference.

The forum convened health care, government, business and community leaders to seek solutions around firearm injuries and death in the United States. Panelists included Chris Christie, 55th Governor of New Jersey; Arne Duncan, Former U.S. Secretary of Education; managing partner, Chicago CRED, Emerson Collective; Will Lee, chief executive officer, ADWEEK; Julie Morita, MD, president and chief executive officer, The Joyce Foundation; Priscilla Sims Brown, president and chief executive officer, Amalgamated Bank and Jadine Chou, partner, PAX Group and former chief of safety and security, Chicago public schools.

Lifespan is a not-for-profit agency that provides information, resources and services to older adults and caregivers in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The webinar was part of Lifespan Health’s Financial Exploitation Webinar Series for Professionals.
