Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Fellowship
Overview
The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Fellowship at the University of Rochester’s Flaum Eye Institute is a one-year AAPOS/AUPO approved clinical program that offers broad exposure to clinical, surgical, educational, and research activities. The fellow divides his/her time between our core faculty members: Drs. Andrea Avila, Matt Gearinger, Ben Hammond, and Alex Levin. There are supplementary experiences with our pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, cornea, retina, oncology and ocular genetics teams.
Fellow Schedule
Surgery: The fellow will spend two days each week in the operating room, including pediatric and adult strabismus; basic pediatric oculoplastics; pediatric cataract/cornea/glaucoma; and full use of diagnostics and imaging to assess genetic and rare diseases, including ocular oncology.
Clinic: The fellow will spend 2.5 days each week in the office. The majority of clinic time will involve pediatric eye diseases and adult strabismus, and there will be monthly clinics in pediatric cornea, ocular genetics, and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology. Weekly ROP rounds will be held with pediatric ophthalmology and retina faculty. The fellow will perform injections and/or laser as needed.
Didactics/Research: One half day each week is set aside for didactics and research. There will be a wide variety of didactics sessions including once monthly ocular genetics journal club and periodic pediatric ophthalmology journal club. In keeping with AAPOS/AUPO guidelines the fellow is required to conduct a minimum of one research project.
International Partnerships: The fellow will participate in monthly didactic sessions and potential research projects with our international partners at the Istituto Giannina Gaslini in Genoa, Italy and the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India. There will be options to have a one week clinical experiences at these sites.
Requirements
Full New York medical licensure eligibility is required. We will assist with the process as needed.
