Environmental Lectures in Global Health and Toxicology (EnLIGHT) Seminar Series

The Environmental Lectures in Global Health and Toxicology seminar series will resume in person seminar. This seminar series features research that encompasses multidisciplinary and cutting-edge approaches to understand how environmental agents (including chemical, nutritional, social, and economic factors) influence health and disease, and contribute to health inequities at local, regional, and global levels. These seminars are supported by our National Institute of Environmental Health Science Center (P30 ES001247), the Department of Environmental Medicine, the Toxicology Training Grant (ES007026), and the Institute for Human Health and the Environment.

Please join us in the Environmental Health Science Center Conference Room 4-8820. There will still be an option to join virtually through Zoom.

If you would like to be added to the seminar list serve or to discuss potential speakers, please contact Hae-Ryung Park.

The University of Rochester is committed to providing inclusive experiences and equal access to programs, services, and meetings. If you anticipate needing any type of communication access (ASL interpreting or real-time captioning), please contact Rebecca Ruston. In all situations, a good faith effort (up until the time of the meeting) will be made to provide accommodations.

EHSC Seminar Series: Tobacco and Radon Exposure: Environmental Risk Reduction using a Community Science Approach

Ellen Hahn, Ph.D., RN - Professor, University of Kentucky

EHSC Seminar Series Highlighted Topic: Cancer and Community Outreach

Project narrative: Co-exposure to tobacco smoke and radon dramatically increases new cases of lung cancer. Yet, few test their homes for radon and public awareness of the seriousness of radon exposure is minimal. BREATHE’s multidisciplinary community-academic team at the University of Kentucky engages with community scientists, community-based organizations, and public libraries to boost home radon testing using digital radon technology and access to affordable radon mitigation.

Chelsea Rochman, PhD - Assistant Professor, University of Toronto

Highlighted topic: Environmental Health and Microplastics

Seminar narrative: Microplastic particles are unique from other contaminants in that they are a physical particle composed of a complex mixture of different chemicals (e.g., monomers, additives). In the environment, they are found in diverse shapes and sizes. This talk will be about how the multidimensional characteristics of microplastics affect their fate, and the exposure and effects to biota in aquatic ecosystems.
