Environmental Lectures in Global Health and Toxicology (EnLIGHT) Seminar Series

The Environmental Lectures in Global Health and Toxicology seminar series will resume in person seminar. This seminar series features research that encompasses multidisciplinary and cutting-edge approaches to understand how environmental agents (including chemical, nutritional, social, and economic factors) influence health and disease, and contribute to health inequities at local, regional, and global levels. These seminars are supported by our National Institute of Environmental Health Science Center (P30 ES001247), the Department of Environmental Medicine, the Toxicology Training Grant (ES007026), and the Institute for Human Health and the Environment.

Please join us in the Environmental Health Science Center Conference Room 4-8820. There will still be an option to join virtually through Zoom.

If you would like to be added to the seminar list serve or to discuss potential speakers, please contact Hae-Ryung Park.

The University of Rochester is committed to providing inclusive experiences and equal access to programs, services, and meetings. If you anticipate needing any type of communication access (ASL interpreting or real-time captioning), please contact Rebecca Ruston. In all situations, a good faith effort (up until the time of the meeting) will be made to provide accommodations.

Public Health Grand Rounds - Gen X and Emerging Perfluorinated Exposures in the Cape Fear River Basin

Jane Hoppin, ScD - Deputy Director, Center for Human Health and the Environment; Professor, Department of Biological Sciences; University Faculty Scholar, NC State

Jane Hoppin, ScD, deputy director, Center for Human Health and the Environment; professor, Department of Biological Sciences; University Faculty Scholar, North Carolina State University, will present "Responding to Community Concerns about Chemical Exposure: The GenX Exposure Study." This presentation will highlight the development and implementation of the GenX Exposure Study, a community based study designed to answer community questions about GenX and other PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) chemicals discovered in drinking water in Wilmington, NC in 2017.

GenX was one of many PFAS produced by a chemical manufacturing facility on the Cape Fear River upriver of the water intake for Wilmington. Dr. Hoppin will describe the community engagement activities, the discovery of novel fluoroethers in the blood of study participants, report back efforts, and next steps for the project.
