Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Education Programs

The pharmacist is an integral part of the medication use system that has traditionally been absent in the emergency department (ED) setting. The Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist Program and the Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Specialty Residency Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) was introduced in 2001 and 2004, respectively.

The primary responsibilities of the emergency pharmacist are to ultimately improve patient care and prevent adverse medication events by making sure the right medication is given to the right patient at the right dose. Improved outcomes and prevention of medication-related adverse events have been shown during the emergency pharmacist involvement in both trauma resuscitation and acute myocardial infarction.

Furthermore, a Pharmacist Managed Antimicrobial Stewardship Program has shown a significant improvement in the time to patient follow-up and notification of positive bacterial cultures. The emergency pharmacist program at URMC has received the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Best Practice Awards in Health-System Pharmacy in 2005 and 2008. This award recognizes outstanding practitioners who have successfully implemented innovative health-system pharmacy practices and services to improve patient care and demonstrate best practices.
