Anthony Casabianca, M.D.
Anthony was born and raised in downstate New York. He graduated with a bachelors of science from Stony Brook University before obtaining a MS and MD from New York Medical College. He began his surgical training as a categorical resident at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson where he developed a strong interest in surgical oncology. He took 3 years dedicated research time during residency, during which he published and presented numerous works on pancreatic cancer metastasis and tumor dormancy. He joined the University of Rochester along with his lab in 2020. Outside of medicine he enjoys playing multiple string and brass instruments, cycling, cooking, and traveling with his partner Kristin. He is interested in surgical oncology and will be starting his fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh in 2025.
Alex Chacon, M.D.
Alex is a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania where he was an Eagle Scout and avid endurance athlete. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a degree in Exercise Science in 2011, later spending 2 years in the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center studying mitochondrial bioenergetics. He completed medical training at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, where he investigated the role of lipid and sphingolipid species in resolution of inflammation in surgical diseases. He joined the University of Rochester General Surgery house staff in 2017. During residency, he completed 3 years of dedicated translational research on melanoma immunobiology and public health research on breast cancer, with special emphasis on the role of diet and lipid metabolism in cancer progression and response to treatment. During this time, he obtained a Masters in Public Health from the University of Rochester. Following residency, he will be completing a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. His favorite activities include spending quality time with family, running, fishing, cooking, and hiking.
Matthew Murray, M.D.
Matt was raised in Levittown, NY and graduated from Long Island University where he majored in Forensic Science and met his wife Rachel. He then went on to complete a master's degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Stony Brook University and worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He then moved to Pennsylvania to complete medical school at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University where he developed an interest in surgery. Following medical school, Matt matched to the University of Rochester to begin his surgical training. His main interest is in Trauma and Acute Care surgery and will be completing a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Rochester next year. In his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, spending time at the lake, hiking, and baking.
Eric Ndikumana, M.D.
Eric grew up in Burundi and moved to Tanzania refugee camp when he was 6 years old before coming to the United States in 6th grade. He went to High School in Denver, Colorado and completed both his undergraduate and graduate in Public Health at Columbia University. He then moved to Hanover, New Hampshire for medical school at Dartmouth prior to starting his general surgery residency at University of Rochester Medical Center in 2019. He completed a year of research in cardiac surgery and is now in the 4+3 program for cardiothoracic surgery at URMC.
William Retz, M.D.
Will was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. He earned his bachelor of science in neuroscience from the University of Rochester, and then spent a year working at a community clinic in South Central Los Angeles before completing his medical degree at the University of Kansas. He then returned to the University of Rochester to begin his general surgery residency in 2020. He has since developed an interest in trauma and emergency general surgery and hopes to match into a surgical critical care fellowship later this summer. Outside of work, Will enjoys spending time with his wife, Bingjie, who is a pediatrics resident, as well as traveling, running, playing fantasy football, and trying new restaurants.
Boru Wang, M.D.
Boru was born in Tianjin, China and moved with his family to Atlanta during elementary school. He attended Emory University where he received his undergraduate degree in chemistry. He subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he developed an interest in general surgery. He moved to Rochester in 2018 for his surgery training, during which he took two years to complete a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at the University at Buffalo. He is excited to start his general surgery career next year.
