How to Apply

We seek candidates with a strong educational background and well-rounded academic and personal experiences. We welcome and encourage applications from all qualified candidates.

Our Residency program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). We have 9 ACGME approved PGY-2 positions in Diagnostic Radiology. New Residents begin on July 1.

Application Deadline

The deadline for receipt of applications and all required documentation is December 1. Dean's letters and/or updated transcripts will be the only documentation accepted after the deadline.

Required Documentation

Required documentation includes USMLE Step 1 scores, medical school transcripts, three letters of recommendation from clinical faculty, a personal statement, and curriculum vitae. Applications and documentation will only be accepted through ERAS. You may solicit letters of recommendation from any faculty members who know you well, but we suggest that they be from physicians who are familiar with your clinical work.

Appointments to the residency program are made at the PGY-2 level. Successful completion of an ACGME approved PGY-1 is required. Most residents perform a medical, surgical, or transitional internship.

Criteria

Members of the residency selection committee review the applications and then invite candidates to interview. Selection criteria are subjective. Most important are evaluations and grades in clinical rotations, with special regard to performance in the core clerkships; class standing and membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society; record of research and publications; performance on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), particularly Step 1; and personal characteristics and life experiences, as ascertained from the Dean's letter, letters of recommendation, personal statement, and interview. We review each application as a whole, and we do not have a threshold value for USMLE scores. However, our average accepted resident USMLE Step 1 score usually is above the national average for radiology residents (approx. USMLE 238).

All letters of invitation are sent via Thalamus. Interview slots are limited and are filled on a first-response basis.

Interviews

Interviews are typically held from October through the beginning of January. Invitations for interviews will be via e-mail. If you have any questions about the Radiology Residency Program or application process, please email Mary Jane Dyer.

How many rotations are off site?

  • The vast majority of residency training occurs at the University of Rochester Medical Center which houses the Department of Imaging Sciences.
  • Residents spend three rotations at the Imaging Sciences Breast Care Center. Residents spend a total of four weeks over the course of four years at our PET/CT Center as part of their Nuclear Medicine training.
  • Additionally, residents spend a two weeks of each musculoskeletal rotation at our outpatient facilities which serves a busy Orthopedic clinic.
  • All of the facilities are within a 10 minute drive from URMC, and residents therefore return for mid-day teaching conferences.
