Curriculum

All five years of training are conducted under the auspices of the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Internship includes six months of rotations in specialties germane to otolaryngology, including three months in pertinent General Surgery subspecialties. Throughout training, residents have the opportunity to participate in the medical and surgical care of patients, with graduated responsibility commensurate with experience and ability. Our program believes in a balanced education, recognizing that both medical decision-making acumen and surgical technical skills are necessary for the growth and maturation of an otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon. Our residents spend on average approximately two days in clinic and three days in the operating room.

Direct supervision is always provided by our program. Faculty are always available in person in the clinic and operating room. Faculty are immediately available for consultative and emergency services throughout the day and night.

General objectives of each rotation are based on the ACGME’s six core competencies of Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Systems-Based Practice, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Professionalism. Rotations are based on otolaryngology subspecialties, and each have specific goals based on each of the five PGY levels.

During the PGY-2 through -5 years, expect to be on-call approximately one-fifth of the time. Our program was granted a resident complement increase to three residents per year, and over time, we expect residents will be on-call one-sixth of their residency. Residents receive 3 weeks of vacation their first year. PGY-2 through -5 residents receive four weeks of vacation per year.
