Ambulatory Rotations and Electives
During PGY2 and PGY3, Adult and Child Neurology residents rotate through several required ambulatory subspecialty blocks, which provides a unique opportunity for residents to see a large number of patients with common and rare neurological conditions alongside internationally renowned subspecialty faculty.
Residents rotate through the following subspecialties:
- Headache/Neuro-Ophthalmology
- Epilepsy/Sleep Medicine
- Neuroimmunology
- Neuro-Oncology/Outpatient Stroke
- Movement Disorders/Memory Care
- Basic EEG
- Neuromuscular, which contains an introduction to EMG
The purpose of these blocks is to gain exposure and comfort with outpatient-based specialized neurological care. This allows residents to deepen their knowledge base, improve their history and examination skills in the outpatient setting, and practice patient and family communication and counseling. Scheduling these blocks early in training also enables residents to better consider these subspecialties as potential fellowship/career options.
EMG/EEG:
Building upon the skills learned during the basic EEG and EMG rotations during PGY2, residents spend time as PGY3s and PGY4s developing their silks in interpreting routine and continuous EEG, and in performing nerve conduction studies/electromyography. There are robust teaching conferences, reading assignments, and quizzes during these clinical neurophysiology rotations.
Electives:
Starting in PGY2, Neurology residents at University of Rochester enjoy several months of dedicated elective time. Electives allow residents to explore Neurology and related subspecialties, to create educational content and teaching opportunities, to participate in research and other scholarly activities, and to experience global neurology through our many international offerings. Electives are available in all standard Neurology subspecialties as well as related fields, as shown below. For many subspecialties, we offer both basic (designed for more junior residents) as well as advanced electives (for more senior residents), all supervised by our extraordinary clinical and/or basic science faculty.
- Neuroradiology
- Neuropathology
- Neuro-rehabilitation
- Palliative Care
- Pain Medicine
- Neurosurgery
- Neurocritical care
- Vascular Neurology
- Epilepsy/EEG
- Neuro-Oncology
- Behavioral Neurology
- Psychiatry
- Neuro-Otology
- Neuro-Ophthalmology
- Movement Disorders
- Neuroimmunology
- Headache
- Sleep Medicine
- General Neurology
Residents can also spend elective time working on research or quality improvement projects, creating educational curricula or other resources, or even in another country as part of our global neurology partnership programs! We also encourage residents to propose and create novel electives based on their interests and career goals, under the supervision of the Program Directors and relevant faculty.
