Health Equity Curriculum
The Health Equity Curriculum takes a longitudinal and multidisciplinary approach to learning– with elements taught by clinicians and the community we serve.
Goals:
- To understand the social and economic challenges many of our patients may face along with their impact on health access and outcomes.
- Discuss interplay between challenges the individual experiences in our health system and the community.
- Learn to advocate for patients as individuals and for populations within our community.
As part of the Meliora Medicine Curriculum: Quality, Safety and Equity as Foundations for Clinical Practice, residents receive:
- Didactic Conferences: On topics including housing, transportation, structural inequalities and more. Much of the conversation surrounds practical frameworks for caring for patients requiring complex biopsychosocial care.
- Community Outreach: All PGY1s have opportunities embedded into their ambulatory blocks for visiting community partners to better understand work done within our community to serve individuals with a variety of needs. Visits have the potential to create inter-agency connections for more effective care.
- Medical Legal Partnership: Training in an environment that provides free civil legal services to ameliorate health harming legal needs for patients.
- Advocacy: Multiple opportunities to develop quality improvement and research surrounding health equity. PGY2 residents have the option to participate in Community Health and Advocacy (CARE) track through the Hoekelman Center.
