Our Facilities

Medical Center Campus

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) comprises the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and the Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Rotations and assignments for Internal Medicine residents occur at Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, and the Wilmot Cancer Center.

Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH)Strong Memorial Hospital

Strong Memorial Hospital, an 850-bed tertiary care center, is the URMC's primary teaching hospital. SMH is located on the URMC's primary campus, a 4 million-square-foot complex next to the University's River Campus, just a half mile south of downtown Rochester. The patient population at SMH is wonderfully diverse in all measurable ways, including racially, ethnically, socioeconomically, and medically. The hospital serves an urban, under-served population from the city of Rochester, along with a mix from the surrounding region consisting of suburban and rural patients, many of whom are also under-served. This link contains more details about the demographics of Monroe County, realizing that ~1/3 of our patients come from outside of Monroe County. As the largest hospital in the greater Rochester area, SMH serves the needs of a very large number of patients with “bread and butter” illnesses, while also serving as a high-end referral center for the most medically complex patients in upstate New York (e.g., multiple transplant types, one of the largest ventricular assist device [VAD] populations in the country, and the most complicated cancers, to name a few).

All of our residents rotate through teams in inpatient general medicine, inpatient hematology-oncology, medical intensive care, coronary care, and palliative care at SMH. Electives in all major subspecialties can also be taken at SMH.

In addition sixty of our residents have their continuity ambulatory experience in the Strong Internal Medicine faculty-resident practice in the ambulatory care facility attached to SMH.

Highland Hospital (HH)Highland Hospital

Highland Hospital is a 270-bed community hospital located just over one mile from SMH and the main URMC campus. In addition to serving as the primary hospital for many primary care practices in the surrounding area, HH is our department's center of excellence for Geriatrics. All of our residents have rotations in inpatient general medicine and Geriatrics at Highland Hospital. Subspecialty electives are also available at HH. Because HH is also the home hospital of the university's Family Medicine residency program, rotations at Highland provide an opportunity for our residents to work alongside their Family Medicine colleagues.

Twelve residents have their continuity experience in the Highland faculty-resident practice in medical office building attached to Highland.

Wilmot Cancer InstituteWilmot Cancer Institute

The Wilmot Cancer Institute is a state of the art, free standing cancer hospital that is connected to Strong Memorial Hospital. Its outpatient clinics opened in 2008, then 2 inpatient floors opened in 2012 and another floor opened in 2014. Residents rotate through the inpatient hematology-oncology service and through many of the specialized hematology and oncology clinics.

FF Thompson HospitalF. F. Thompson Hospital

F.F. Thompson Hospital is a 113-bed acute care community hospital. Proud of its commitment to primary care medicine and being a part of the community it serves, Thompson is an ANCC Magnet designated hospital for nursing excellence. With a respected medical staff numbering more than 400, a community volunteer group with over 200 members and approximately 1,400 Associates, Thompson provides quality health care to approximately 165,000 residents of the greater Finger Lakes region including Ontario, Wayne, Monroe and Livingston counties.

Strong WestStrong West

Strong West opened its doors in 2013 on the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital campus on West Avenue. The facility's services have grown quickly, creating a hub of UR Medicine health providers, including care offered by the Ambulatory Surgery Center staff, Imaging, Labs, UR Medicine Heart and Vascular, Primary Care, Orthopaedics, and the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

Additionally, a talented team from Emergency Medicine helped create a first-of-its-kind, offsite Emergency Room, a new model of care in New York state. Providing emergency coverage for the area was the No. 1 priority of UR Medicine, to ensure patients once cared for at Lakeside had access to vital health care services within their local community.

Other Facilities

Depending on their elective choices, residents may spend time at a variety of University-owned or -affiliated facilities. A number of subspecialty ambulatory practices are located in outpatient complexes within a five minute drive of the main URMC campus. Our new Community Service Elective takes place at the St. Joseph's Neighborhood Health Center, also located within a five minute drive of the main URMC campus.

Carlo Arevalo-Rodriquez, MDExcellent program to learn Medicine. I feel that the combination with HH and SMH allows us to see very broad presentations of diseases, as well as different complexity of cases which is very important too."
