Residents on Rochester Pedal TourThe Greater Rochester area and surrounding counties constitute a community of over one million residents spread over many neighborhoods and townships. Popular neighborhoods include the South Wedge, Park Avenue, and the white coat neighborhood just south of the Medical Center. The city has been rated by Forbes as one of America’s top ten most livable cities, and the most livable city in the 2007 edition of Places Rated Almanac. The city is home to the country's premier Supermarket (Wegmans), many popular sports teams (Red Wings baseball, Amerks hockey, Rhinos soccer), art (The Memorial Art Gallery) and music (Eastman School of Music, the Rochester Philharmonic and the Annual Jazz Festival), as well as professional local and national programs on stage (GEVA Theatre).

The region’s spring and summer are beautiful, with the summer months kicked off with the annual Lilac Festival and subsequently dominated by a variety of festivals almost every weekend. The fall is also picturesque, drawing travelers to the region from across the country for the turning of the leaves. The winters are snowy, and are great for skiing, ice skating, and other such activities. Our program capitalizes on seasonal activities, the city’s numerous unique venues, and the low cost of living for various events, including monthly social outings. The University

Rochester, formerly an old mill town (and hub for rum-running), has boasted a resilient economy through recent economic recessions and expansions alike, partly due to strong technology, research, and education markets. The University of Rochester is the city’s largest employer, with the Medical Center providing the lion’s share of the University’s jobs. The Medical Center is nationally ranked in many specialties and is the only academic medical center in the Greater Rochester area, serving as a tertiary and quaternary referral center for Western and Central New York and beyond. The School of Medicine & Dentistry is highly ranked in both research and primary care, and also provides many opportunities for our students to become extensively involved in community service on campus and in the community.
