Curriculum/Education
Clinical Rotations
Main OR – 7-8 blocks
Fellows are exposed to the full array of pediatric cases, including out-of-OR experiences. Fellows have priority for index and interesting or challenging cases. During this time, fellows are scheduled for at least two weeks of supervisory OR management toward the end of fellowship. In addition further cardiac experience is provided in cath lab, MRI, as well as non cardiac surgery for this patient population. Some vacation time is typically taken from this block.
Critical Care – 1 block
Fellows typically rotate 4 weeks on the PICU with the opportunity to rotate in the pediatric CICU if desired. PICU faculty provide a didactic curriculum and daily bedside teaching.
Cardiac Anesthesia – 1 block
This block is dedicated solely to congenital cardiac surgery. There is opportunity to spend more time in the cardiac OR if desired. Non-operative cardiac cases – MRI, IR, Cath lab, etc are integrated into the Main OR blocks
Palliative Care/Pain – 1 block
Elective – 1 block
This can be more time dedicated to the general ORs, a 2 week ambulatory anesthesia experience, etc. Additionally, some fellows independently arrange for away rotations. Research and other elective options are available with approval from the Program Director.
Education/Didactics
The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship has a comprehensive educational curriculum including:
- Weekly fellows lectures/PBLDs
- Daily morning lectures covering core pediatric anesthesia topics (optional)
- Weekly departmental grand rounds
- Monthly departmental QI committee – the fellow is automatically a member of the Dept. of Anesthesiology QI committee
- Journal Club
- Multidisciplinary simulation and teaching for the Pediatric Difficult Airway
- Quality improvement lectures
- Mock oral board exam preparation and OSCE preparation
The Pediatric Anesthesiology fellows are required to present at departmental Grand Rounds and complete a QI project under mentorship of a faculty member. All of our fellows have presented a poster at SPA, ASA or PGA, and the past 2 fellows have presented PBLDs at SPA.
