Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

Welcome from Chair of Medicine Dr. O'Regan

Why Choose Our Program?

Our program prides itself on having the resources and flexibility to tailor an individualized learning plan for the development of the trainee’s career interests beyond the core requirements. Our main goal is to provide Internal Medicine specialists with subspecialty training in the fields of digestive and liver diseases, allowing competence to be achieved in the requisite knowledge base, critical thinking skills, procedural skills, humanistic and ethical skills encompassed by these fields.

  • In a carefully structured and supervised setting, trainees are exposed to clinical and procedural activities designed to gradually increase in complexity while they gradually decrease in the level of directed supervision.
  • Trainees are provided structured opportunities to develop teaching skills at a variety of levels.
  • Trainees participate in scientific research as a means of promoting the development of the investigative and inquisitive critical thinking skills required of subspecialty consultants in order to generate new knowledge and improve patient care.

Flexible Curriculum

There is flexibility in the program, and it is not uncommon for fellows to tailor tracks to fit their needs during training as their learning objectives and career goals evolve.

Mentor Relationships

Our fellows most commonly reference the personal relationships and valuable mentoring they receive as one of the top reasons why they would recommend URMC.

Life of a URMC Fellow

Our emphasis on work/life balance is an important reason fellows choose URMC. A focus on trainees' well-being enables you to learn and thrive in Rochester.

What Our Fellows are Saying

Andrew Brown, MD

“I chose URMC GI because it provides exceptional clinical training, endoscopic training and research opportunities. The faculty size is the perfect size; there are experts to learn from in all the different subspecialties of GI, but you will also know every faculty member and they will know you. This program ensures you are a well-trained, well rounded gastroenterologist that can thrive in any career environment you choose.”
