Mutual Support Community of Practice: From Crisis to Connection

Supported by the Office of Wellbeing and the Meliora Presidential Award, in collaboration with UR Medicine EAP and the YoUR Support Team

Debriefing protocols are commonly used after critical events, but uncertainty remains about which approaches are effective, and which may cause unintended harm. While some expertise exists within URMC, too few individuals are trained to provide psychological first aid, peer support, or structured debriefings.

This initiative proposes a shift to a distributed support model, grounded in evidence-based guidance and sustained through a mutual support community of practice. Mutual support has been shown to increase staff retention, reduce clinical errors, decrease distress, and strengthen team cohesion—all critical outcomes in today’s healthcare environment.

 Participants will include:

  • Current department leaders and managers, or their designees
  • Wellness committee members

Program Components:

In collaboration with TEND Academy, a leader in trauma-informed care and mutual support, participants will complete a 2-hour training on Wed. Sept 10, from 10am-12pm, 1W-501 Fiaretti Classroom, or via zoom, on best practices for debriefing and sustaining peer support networks.

This will be followed by four 1-hour breakout sessions throughout the year to explore:

  1. Applying trauma-informed mutual support in daily practice, 9/24/2025, 7:30am-8:30am
  2. Tailoring debriefings to unit-specific needs, 10/16/2025, 3pm-4pm
  3. Recognizing and addressing the impact of indirect stressors, 11/4/2025, 10am-11am
  4. Measuring impact and sustaining engagement, 11/20/2025, 2pm-3pm

All locations for breakout sessions are 1W-501 Fiaretti Classroom, or via zoom. For maximum impact, attendance at each of the four breakout sessions is requested.
