Our Educational Facilities
Our children's hospital is a tertiary/quaternary care center with neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, a Level one Trauma Center, and a full complement of primary care and subspecialty services. Our residents complete inpatient consults, see patients in the operating room, and complete their pediatric medicine rotations at GCH.
Eastman Institute for Oral Health’s mission is to improve oral health care through caring, discovery, teaching and learning. The Eastman Dental Dispensary (now EIOH) has been serving children in the Rochester Community since 1917. EIOH is unique among academic health centers in the United States: despite the absence of an undergraduate dental school, we have internationally recognized dental residency programs, vibrant oral biology research in the top tier of NIDCR rankings, and robust clinical services in most dental specialties. EIOH offers seven Postdoctoral Dental Education and Residency Training Programs, including Pediatric Dentistry. Our Pediatric Dentistry Resident Clinic has five quiet room operatories and an open bay with 12 dental chairs. Residents provide comprehensive oral health care to children and adolescents throughout the two years of the program.

There are multiple sites within the network of community dentistry to address needs in the local community. School #17 has a dental clinic located within its walls to serve the school and the local community. There are three mobile dental units as part of the SMILEmobile program which has been in existence since 1967. These mobile units go to Rochester City Schools, day cares, Hillside Children’s Center, and Mary Cariola Center. Hillside serves children with emotional and behavior health care needs while Mary Cariola helps children with intellectual and developmental disabilities here in Rochester.

URMC Surgical Center
URMC Surgical Center is one location where our residents treat children with extensive dental needs with general anesthesia as an adjunct. This practice is limited to the use of general anesthesia administered by pediatric anesthesiologists from the Department of Anesthesiology. URMC Surgery Center (informally known as “Sawgrass”) was opened in 2009 and features ten operating rooms and three procedure rooms which equipped with advanced technology for optimal care and spacious facilities for the comfort and privacy for patients. By housing roughly 10,000 outpatient cases per year, Sawgrass provides the greater Rochester area with an ideal setting for the ever-increasing demand for ambulatory surgical procedures.
Our residents actively participate in Craniofacial Team meetings during their second year. Treating birth defects involving cleft lip, cleft palate, and other craniofacial anomalies requires the expertise of specialists from a variety of medical fields. Depending upon the child's specific needs, his or her care team may include specialists from pediatric and plastic surgery, pediatric medicine, dentistry, audiology, and speech and language—just to name a few. This type of multidisciplinary approach is recommended by the American Cleft Palate Association (ACPA).
Ronald McDonald House Charities Children’s Emergency Department at Strong Memorial Hospital
Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides state-of-the-art care for more than 25,000 children each year. Opened in 2001 as a component of the region's largest and most modern emergency facility, children 18 and under who are acutely ill or injured can get specialized care in a reassuring, child-focused environment. Pediatric Dentistry takes call for orofacial trauma and infection at the Emergency Department.
Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center
The Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center is an independent, federally designated Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) in Rochester, New York (serving people in the surrounding 12 county region) that cares for people affected by hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, other rare bleeding disorders, hemochromatosis and Gaucher’s Disease. The Center started in the late 1940s, when Rochester-area families affected by bleeding disorders came together to improve their lives and the lives of their children. Second year residents rotate with the Hemophilia Center.
