Support & Survivorship
Support
Esophageal cancer can affect many aspects of your life. Nutrition is a concern, for example, because the cancer and its treatments can affect swallowing and eating. Wilmot provides the most extensive support services for patients and their families in the area.
Gastrointestinal Support Group
This group currently meets monthly, with an option to join in person in Webster or via Zoom. It is open to patients with pancreatic, colorectal, liver, esophageal, stomach and other GI cancers and their care partners. To register, call (585) 276-4708 or email WilmotCommunityResHelp@URMC.Rochester.edu. Learn about other support groups at Wilmot.
Survivorship
A healthy life after cancer is the goal of every patient. But the best way to achieve that varies widely — depending on you, your type of cancer, and the treatment you received.
The Wilmot Cancer Institute offer's the area's only Survivorship Program. We provide each patient with a comprehensive plan for life after esophageal cancer, personalized to your health, life, goals, and concerns. To learn more about the program, talk with your care team.
Palliative Care
At Wilmot Cancer Institute, physicians from UR Medicine's Palliative Care Program are key members of the care team. Palliative care focuses on alleviating pain and symptoms — such as nausea and shortness of breath — that can come with a serious illness like cancer and its treatments. Sometimes confused with hospice, palliative care can accompany any and all desired medical treatment for cancer or other conditions. It is about helping those facing cancer and their families live better while they're undergoing treatment.
