4-2800 Cardio-Vascular Intensive Care Unit
The CVICU is a two time winner of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Beacon award for critical care excellence. This award validates the excellent clinical and work environment standards that are upheld on the unit. The CVICU is the region’s most comprehensive intensive care unit responsible for the care of the adult cardiac surgery, heart transplant, artificial heart support, intra aortic balloon pump, hypothermia protocol and cardiogenic shock patients. The unit also staffs the regions premiere Critical Care Transport Unit. This team is capable of transporting highly complex patients by ground and through the air, providing support to the surrounding hospitals and communities. The highly technical nature of the advances in treating these populations necessitates a highly organized orientation and continuing education process. The unit is staffed with 24/7 provider coverage, this collaborative approach insures that our nurses have continuous support as they care for this complex population. With a dedicated leadership team the staff is highly trained, supported and empowered to participate as the Strong Heart and Vascular center changes the way Heart Disease is treated.
7-1200 Thoracic, Plastic, and ENT Surgery Stepdown Unit
25 bed unit
This unit specializes in the pre and postoperative care of thoracic, plastic reconstructive and ENT surgery patients. The nurses utilize a nurse driven, research and evidence based practice approach to provide the highest quality care to the patient population. The team provides treatment and diagnosis in lung and esophageal cancer, GERD, reconstructive plastic surgery, hearing issues, and cancers of the mouth and throat.
7-1400 Cardiac Care (Step – Down) Unit

This unit is a Cardiovascular Step – Down Unit that is truly the CCU for the URMC. The unit specializes in the patient with acute coronary syndrome, Myocardial Infarction, and angioplasty. Care for patients with complex cardiac arrhythmia sometimes requiring temporary pacing. The unit is the sister unit with the cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs and is fast paced with high throughput of an exciting patient population.
7-3400 Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Progressive Care Unit
24 beds
This Progressive care Unit is a unique environment providing care to the Heart Failure population across the continuum of their disease. Patients cared for on this progressive care unit include those awaiting heart transplants, those with Ventricular Assist Devices as a bridge to transplant, cardiac recovery or as destination therapy. A unique feature of the unit is the ability to manage patients with invasive cardiac monitoring. The progressive nature of heart failure requires a multidisciplinary approach to provide consistent support and ongoing education. 7-3400’s dedicated staff is committed to providing knowledgeable and compassionate care. The training and continued technological advances allow us to promote a better quality of life for patients and their families.
7-3600 Cardio-Vascular Surgery Progressive Care Unit

This unit is a Cardiac and Vascular surgery unit. The patient population consists primarily of post-operative cardiac surgery patients, transferred from the Cardiovascular ICU, and post-operative vascular surgery patients. The typical cardiac surgery patients undergo, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts, Aortic and Mitral Valve repairs, and Aortic Aneurysm repairs. The vascular surgery patients have had surgeries that include, Carotid Endarterectomies, Abdominal Aneurysm repairs, various arterial stents, and Lower Extremity Bypasses.
Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs
The Cath lab is an inpatient and outpatient procedural labs focusing on mechanical and electrical diagnosis and intervention for cardiac patients for the upstate New York region. The 4 Cath labs and 3 EP labs care for adult and pediatric patients with a wide range of patient conditions. The Cath lab has a comprehensive program with pre and post procedural care holding area. The practice model is rich with RN staff with CVT collaboration focusing on excellent patient outcome and satisfaction.
