New Friends of Strong Website Aims to Support Blood Drives & SMH

A new feature for UR Medicine Blood Drives has been added to the Friends of Strong website. This site is home to information about upcoming drives, how you can register, and tips for first-time donors.

As the sponsor for all of UR Medicine’s American Red Cross Blood Drives, Friends of Strong aims to ensure our local Red Cross can continue to supply us—the largest consumer in the region—with a resource that’s critical to our patient care. Now there is a simple place to turn to find out everything you need to know about our  Blood Drives, and how you can help give the gift of life.

Traditionally blood supply is at its lowest point during the first few months of the New Year largely due to the holiday and flu season. The units donated via UR Medicine drives stay in the community to help the people right here.

Each month, Friends of Strong and the American Red Cross offer all presenting donors a token of appreciation, like a gift card or movie pass.

There are several opportunities to donate this month—check the Friends of Strong site for upcoming drives. Walk-ins are welcome but advance registration is preferred. See the four, quick steps on the site to schedule your next donation.

Established in 1975, Friends of Strong works to advance the mission of Strong Memorial Hospital. Through the innovative use of a diverse team of staff and volunteers working together, Friends of Strong provides services to patients, families, and visitors; promotes the hospital in the community, and organizes fundraising activities to raise money to support patient care by helping departments meet critical hospital needs. In 2013, more than 1,300 volunteers donated nearly 110,000 hours of service, which contributed to approximately $800,000 in equipment and other items Friends of Strong was able to provide to more than 30 departments across the hospital.

Funds raised through Friends of Strong initiatives have helped purchase items such as patient wheelchairs, oxygen monitors, birthing delivery carts, a digital imaging system, a bladder scanner, and even Giraffe bed warmers for the Department of Pediatrics.
