Critical Care Medicine

The Department of Medicine’s Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Division provides the tertiary and quaternary critical care services of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Medical and Intensive Progressive Care Unit (MIPCU) services at Strong Memorial Hospital. Our critical care team offers the full spectrum of life-saving interventions that may be required during any critical illness, including:

  • Multi-disciplinary critical care teams including critical care specialty physicians, advanced practice practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, physical therapists, and social workers.
  • Daily access to consultants from all specialty divisions within the clinical departments including Medicine, Surgery, Imaging Sciences, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Emergency Medicine / Toxicology.
  • Non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation, advanced hemodynamic support and monitoring, intermittent and continuous renal replacement therapy, and nutritional support.

Our team also provides critical care expertise outside Strong Memorial Hospital. Our faculty provides the medical and surgical critical services at Highland and FF Thompson hospitals. This comprehensive coverage promotes a network of community-wide critical care, allowing seamless transitions between these sites if and when necessary.

The need for critical care is a crisis in the lives of our patients and their families. We understand this, and our multidisciplinary team of experts is here to help.
