MFT Licensure in New York State
The University of Rochester M.S. Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy is registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure qualifying. Graduates from our program are prepared for entry-level practice as MFTs in New York State for supervised practice under limited permit supervision. For New York State specific licensure information, please visit the NYS Office of the Professions

MFT Licensure Outside of New York State (Portability)
The Marriage and Family Therapy Program at University of Rochester is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), 112 South Alfred Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314, (703)838-9808, coa@aamft.org, which is relevant for those who might seek licensure outside of New York State. A professional license is required to practice as an MFT in all states and the requirements vary by state.

To comply with a new U.S. Department of Education regulation (34 CFR § 668.43(a)5.v.) for institutions enrolling students in programs for which state licensure is required for employment, below is our current knowledge of our UR MS MFT program (a) determination that our curriculum meets the state educational requirements; (b) determination that our curriculum does not meeting the state education requirements and (c) where we have not made a determination about meeting the state education requirements. Many states have educational requirements that align with COAMFTE accredited program status. Some states require specific course content that is not covered in our curriculum (e.g., coursework in addictions treatment, which is outside the MFT scope of practice in NYS and not offered as a credit-bearing course in our program of study). Alumni who pursue licensure in a state requiring additional coursework to meet educational requirements in that state have been successful by obtaining supplemental education through online or in-state offered coursework post-graduation.
