Health Power
Lynette Froula, M.D. created “Health Power” as her Pediatric Links to the Community (PLC)/CARE track project. Health Power is a youth development program that takes place in a high school health class. Dr. Froula worked with public health undergraduates to develop a curriculum that covers major adolescent health issues and core concepts in public health. In the course, guided by undergraduate mentors, the high school students identify a health problem in their community and implement an intervention project.
Dr. Froula is ready to test her hypothesis that, with the opportunity to positively impact their community, and with the positive influence of their mentors, students gain leadership and problem-solving skills, a sense of empowerment, and confidence in their personal potential for success.
Her project was funded by a grant from the CPAC Small Grants Program sponsored by the PLC Program and Dr. Michael and Mrs. Angela Pichichero. Residents in the Pediatrics Links to the Community /Child Advocacy Resident Education Track perform community based projects under the mentorship of C. Andrew Aligne, M.D., M.P.H., Co-director of the PLC/CARE program.
