BS/MS Scholarships

BS/MS candidates may apply for one of two scholarships, the Menegus and Marquis awards in microbiology, which support an equivalent of 25% of the BS/MS tuition. Candidates may apply to only one these scholarships.

The Menegus Scholarship

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is strongly committed to promoting and supporting diversity in its training of the next generation of biomedical research professionals. We believe that diversity in the student population enhances the Department of Microbiology and Immunology’s educational experience and strengthens our community. 

To help further the Department of Microbiology and Immunology’s interest in diversity the Department is proud to offer up to one annual scholarship, representing 50% of current tuition costs for SMD graduate students. The scholarship is predicated upon acceptance into the BS/MS Immunology, Microbiology and Virology Program. 

The scholarship is named for Dr. Marilyn A. Menegus, Ph.D., who was an extremely accomplished and well respected microbiologist. Dr. Menegus joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in 1976 and trained more than 40 clinical microbiology fellows and five infectious disease fellows during her 41 year career

Scholarship Application Process

Each applicant’s qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. Submission of the following materials is required for consideration:

  1. Single-page personal statement addressing the following:

    1. Academic performance
    2. Independent research experience and scientific motivation
    3. Long-term career goals, and reasons for applying to the program
    4. How your educational and socio-cultural experiences or geographic background can enhance the diversity and inclusion mission of the School of Medicine & Dentistry and/or your sustained commitment to diversity and inclusion in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations in a way that directly contributes to the quality of the intellectual environment of the university.
  2. An official or recent academic transcript
  3. A curriculum vitae (CV)
     

Interested candidates may utilize their BS/MS Immunology, Microbiology, and Virology graduate program materials to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship application materials should be sent to Jacques Robert, Ph.D. via e-mail at: Jacques_Robert@URMC.Rochester.edu

The annual deadline for the scholarship application is June 30.  Up to one award is made annually.

​The Marquis Scholarship

This scholarship is intended for candidates with outstanding academic standing and research achievements. Merit will be evaluated on the basis of academic excellence, outstanding research experience and achievement, and demonstrated mastery of complex challenges.

Dr. Robert E. Marquis, Ph.D., past chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, was the advisor to many Microbiology undergraduates and a beloved teacher to many students who trained at the University.

Interested candidates should submit their application during the last undergraduate semester or no later than June 30 of their graduation year. The application material should include:

  1. One page personal statement addressing the following three criteria
    1. Academic performance
    2. Independent research accomplishment and scientific motivation
    3. Long-term career goals, and reasons for applying to the program
  2. An official or recent academic transcript
  3. A curriculum vitae (CV)

Interested candidates should submit their application during the last undergraduate semester or no later than June 30 of their graduation year.

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt by an admission committee made up of 3 Faculty members of the department of Microbiology and Immunology, and a decision communicated to the applicant within a month of submission.
