Antibiotic Stewardship Program

Faculty of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program

We want to provide the best care to you while you are in the hospital. Antibiotics are important to treat infections caused by bacteria, but they also have side-effects and, if used incorrectly, may lead to infections that are more difficult to treat. Antibiotic stewardship efforts at URMC are focused on “choosing wisely”, which means using antibiotics when they are necessary, and avoiding them or stopping them when no longer needed.

Know the Facts about Antibiotic Use

“Antibiotic stewardship is the effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients. Improving antibiotic prescribing and use is critical to effectively treat infections, protect patients from harms caused by unnecessary antibiotic use, and combat antibiotic resistance.” (From the CDC)
