Medical Student Education
The Department of Medicine promotes a strong educational mission by which all faculty, fellows, and residents are encouraged to play in active role in medical student education. The Department fosters an experiential approach to student medical education where students play an integral role in team rounding and patient care during both required and elective internal medicine rotations.
Third-Year Medicine Clerkship
The Adult Inpatient Medicine Clerkship is an 8-week hospital-based experience that provides medical students with foundational exposure to the breadth of adult clinical medicine. Students are fully integrated into inpatient hospital medicine and sub-specialties teams and actively participate in the diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic care of patients with both acute and chronic illnesses. The educational goals of the clerkship emphasize the development of bedside clinical skills, diagnostic reasoning, inter-professional collaboration, and patient-centered communication.

Fourth-Year Medicine Acting Internships
The Medicine Acting Internship is a 4-week experience that allows fourth-year medical students to work on an inpatient medicine team with the same responsibilities as a medicine intern. This includes being the first call for their patients for acute issues and questions, developing clinical reasoning skills with a focus on differential diagnosis and management plan formulation, and placing orders for their own patients. Students who qualify for an honors acting internship also gain experience in cross-coverage of their team.

Clinical Electives in Internal Medicine
Students can choose from a variety of general medicine and sub-specialty clinical electives during their third or fourth years. These elective experiences provide close interactions with specialty faculty and fellows and allow students to deepen their understanding of particular medical specialties of interest.
