Introduction
Madeline H. Schmitt, R.N., Ph.D. was a member of the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Nursing from 1972 until her retirement in 2005. Dr. Schmitt has been prominent as a teacher, administrator, researcher, and mentor to numerous graduate and undergraduate students, and was an integral figure in the School of Nursing’s emergence as an autonomous school within the University. Dr. Schmitt began the transfer of her papers to the Edward G. Miner Library at the time of her retirement. Processing the Papers of Madeline H. Schmitt, Ph.D. was completed in the fall of 2011. The collection is contained in fifty-eight boxes occupying thirty-eight linear feet. A second series of papers reflecting her pioneering research on collaborative practice and interprofessional education will be transferred to the Miner Library at a future date.
Biography
Madeline Hubbard was born on 1 July 1943 in Rochester, N.Y. to Lloyd Bertrand Hubbard and Mae Ketchum Hubbard. After her father returned from military service, the Schmitt family moved to Ontario and then Wayne counties, where her father farmed. When Madeline Hubbard was nine, her family moved back to Rochester, where she attended School No. 22 on Zimbrich St. and Benjamin Franklin High School, from which she graduated in 1961. Aspiring to be a nurse since childhood, Hubbard initially applied to the Genesee Hospital School of Nursing (Rochester, N.Y.), but entered the University of Rochester’s nursing program through the influence of her fourth-year English teacher, whose wife was on the faculty.
Schmitt received her B.S. from the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1965. She worked as a public health nurse with the Monroe County (N.Y.) Health Department before entering the graduate program in sociology at the University of Rochester, where she received her master’s degree in 1970. As the doctoral sociology program at Rochester was not then in place, Schmitt entered the program at SUNY Buffalo, where her course of studies (1970-71) focused on medical sociology, social psychology and small groups. She returned to the University of Rochester in January 1972 as an assistant professor in the Dept. of Nursing and interim director of graduate programs. In September 1973, Schmitt was also appointed assistant professor in the University’s Sociology Dept.
Before Dr. Loretta Ford was appointed dean in July, 1972, nursing education at the University of Rochester had been a department within the medical school. Upon Ford's appointment, the Dept. of Nursing became the School of Nursing, in which Schmitt continued as an assistant professor and interim director of graduate programs. She also completed her dissertation, and in 1976 received a doctoral degree in sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In July 1978 Schmitt was promoted to associate professor of nursing and of sociology; and in July 1983 was made assistant professor of oncology in the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Cancer Center. In 1992 she was made professor of nursing, a position Schmitt held until retirement in June 2005.
Madeline H. Schmitt played a major role in establishing and expanding the graduate studies and faculty research programs at the School of Nursing. From the time of her initial faculty appointment, Schmitt served as Associate Chairman for Graduate Studies, Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies, and director of Faculty Research Development (1977-80). During the 1992-93 academic year, she was interim chair of the School's Division of Health Restoration. Schmitt served as Interim Director of the doctoral program for a year, and then, Coordinator of the doctoral program within the School of Nursing, adding administrative responsibility for the MS/PhD program when it was established in 2000. She was also active on numerous Medical Center and University committees and task forces, served as faculty and/or thesis advisor to numerous master’s and doctoral candidates, and maintained involvement in various community service programs.
In addition to her teaching and administrative responsibilities, Schmitt was engaged in numerous grant-funded research projects, ranging from studies of adolescent pregnancy (1976-79) to faculty research development (1976-81), behavioral issues in weight reduction (1976-78), social support and cancer patients (1983-88), interdisciplinary health care teams (from 1982), and issues pertaining to geriatric care, palliative care and end-of-life decision making. Schmitt co-authored Behavioral science and nursing theory published at St. Louis in 1983. She was also the author or co-author of more than fifty journal articles, fourteen book chapters, a dozen book reviews, nearly three dozen editorials, and other publications. She has made more than 150 professional presentations in the United States and abroad as a conference participant and as a guest lecturer.
In October 1963 Madeline Hubbard married Albert Thomas Schmitt, with whom she had a daughter, Jennifer Ann, born in 1968. In August 1976, she married Michael Patrick Farrell, with whom she raised her daughter and two step children: Michael Paul Farrell (b. 1964) and Colleen Claire Farrell Smith (b. 1968).
