Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the University of Rochester Department of Imaging Sciences!  

Our department has outstanding faculty educators, scientists, and clinicians. We serve a large catchment area such that our case variety is broad.  We have made significant capital investments in imaging, resulting in cutting edge technologies. 

We are known nationally for our strength in artificial intelligence, quality & safety, development of screening programs, cardiac imaging, and research in ultrasound/optics. We are deeply embedded in artificial intelligence with more than a dozen pixel-based programs used daily for studies throughout our enterprise. We are also invested in AI that reduces radiation dose, improves image quality, and improves workflow efficiency. 

We invest in wellbeing for all in our department with a dedicated Vice-chair and committee with many social opportunities to connect. My personal favorite is going to the Amerks hockey game. Investment in spaces and opportunities to connect with one another is also valued.  

I enjoy living in Rochester. The city is culturally rich with the Eastman School of Music and festivals every summer weekend. The Lilac Festival and Clothesline are my two favorites. The restaurants are superb and diverse in offerings. The cost of living is very low. Mostly, I really enjoy the people. It is somewhere between the practicality of New Englanders and the friendliness of the Mid-West. The leaders of our health system are very collegial. We help each other. 

With all of this though, the most important factor in deciding where to spend your career is the culture of the department. Our residents are happy and well-trained, so much so that many chose to stay on or return to us as faculty. We value fairness, transparency, respect, and innovation.
