Highland Names Three Physician Leaders

Matthew Bresler, M.D., M.B.A., Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, Department of Anesthesiology, University of Rochester Medical Center and Highland Hospital, has been named Chief of Anesthesiology; Benjamin F. Ricciardi, M.D., FAAOS, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been named Highland’s Chief of Orthopaedics,  and Lawrence Saubermann, M.D., gastroenterologist, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine has been named Medical Director of Endoscopy.

Dr. Bresler has served as Director of Obstetric Anesthesiology at Highland since 2019. He received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University, his M.B.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology and his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital. Dr. Bresler is honored and excited for the opportunity to lead the Highland anesthesiologists. He looks forward to working with other Highland faculty, the Highland community, and administration to continue the excellent relationships and patient care that have been developed at Highland.

Dr. Ricciardi, an Orthopaedic surgeon, who specializes in total knee replacements and total hip replacements, has been a distinguished member of the faculty at Highland and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry for six years.  A graduate of Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Ricciardi received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Colby College. He completed a residency in Orthopaedic surgery and a fellowship in adult reconstruction and joint replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City where he also served as a research fellow in the mineralized tissue laboratory. He also completed a European Fellowship in hip reconstruction with the ME Müller Foundation. The Hospital for Special Surgery, where Dr. Ricciardi received his training, is the world’s largest academic medical center dedicated to Orthopaedics, rheumatology, and related specialties. Dr. Ricciardi is looking forward to working with Highland’s dedicated team to continue the tradition of excellence in Orthopaedic care provided at Highland.

Dr. Saubermann, gastroenterologist, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine will assume the role of Medical Director of Endoscopy. He is a graduate of Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, and completed his medical degree at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. His internship and residency in Internal Medicine was done at Rhode Island Hospital (Brown University) in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Saubermann then completed a clinical and research fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts.

After practicing in Boston for several years, he came to Strong Memorial Hospital as an Associate Professor to continue his research and clinical activities in the area of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.  In 2010 he became the Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Golisano Children's Hospital, and was promoted to full Professor in both Pediatrics and Medicine.  During his time as division chief, he grew a robust practice and became a recognized regional and national leader in IBD.  After 12 years as chief he stepped down to pursue a new project, becoming the URMC GI Lead at Highland Hospital in 2023.  He continues to participate in research and teaching in order to provide state-of-the-art excellent patient care.
