Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What Are the Visiting Hours?
A. ICU visiting hours are flexible and patient-focused. We ask that you partner with us to help make patient care and safety our first priority. We also ask that you partner with us and avoid asking questions of the health care team during the hours of 6:30 am to 8:30 am, as well as 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, to support our change of shift report. We appreciate your cooperation.
Q. Who Can Visit the Patient?
A. Visitation is open to direct family members and significant others. For the safety of our patients as well as their own safety, children under the age of 12 may not be permitted to visit.
Q. How Many People Are Permitted in the Room at One Time?
A. We limit visitation in the ICU to two visitors at a time. This is the maximum number that our patient rooms can accommodate, as our staff needs to have easy access to both the patient, as well as the medical equipment. Under extreme circumstances, per the discretion of the health care team, we can accommodate additional visitors.
Q. When Will I be Asked to Step Out of the Patient's Room?
A. As patient care is our first priority, we may ask visitors to step out of the room for various reasons. The health care team will ask you to step out during certain patient care activities, such as patient assessments, linen changes and dressing changes, as well as various tests and procedures. If we are concerned about patient overstimulation, we may also ask visitors to step out.
Q. Will I be Asked to Step Out of the Room During Interdisciplinary Rounds?
A. Interdisciplinary rounds consist of the health care team discussing the daily plan of care for each of our patients. We will ask visitors to step out of the patient rooms during rounds, to protect the confidentiality of each of our patients.
Q. Will I be Asked to Step Out of the Room During Dialysis?
A. The initiation and completion of dialysis treatments require a sterile environment. For that reason, family members will be asked to step out at these times.
Q. Can I Stay Overnight?
A. While we accommodate open visitation, we cannot allow visitors to remain in the patient rooms or in the waiting room overnight. Hotel accommodations can be arranged, at a reduced rate, through Guest Services at Strong Memorial Hospital. To contact them, please call (585) 275-7581.
Q. Can I Listen to the Radio or Watch TV While the Patient is Sleeping?
A. We encourage family members to spend time with their loved ones. Family members may listen to the radio and/or watch TV, at a reasonable volume, as long as it is not disturbing the patient.
Q. Can I Eat and Drink in the Patient Rooms?
A. We ask that you please not eat or drink in the patient rooms. We appreciate your assistance with maintaining a clean and healthy patient care environment.
Q. Can I Take Pictures or Videotape my Loved One?
A. Highland Hospital does not permit family members to take pictures or videos of our patients, as it may compromise the patient's right to privacy and confidentiality.
