Jane Hoppin, ScD, deputy director, Center for Human Health and the Environment; professor, Department of Biological Sciences; University Faculty Scholar, North Carolina State University, will present "Responding to Community Concerns about Chemical Exposure: The GenX Exposure Study." This presentation will highlight the development and implementation of the GenX Exposure Study, a community based study designed to answer community questions about GenX and other PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) chemicals discovered in drinking water in Wilmington, NC in 2017.
GenX was one of many PFAS produced by a chemical manufacturing facility on the Cape Fear River upriver of the water intake for Wilmington. Dr. Hoppin will describe the community engagement activities, the discovery of novel fluoroethers in the blood of study participants, report back efforts, and next steps for the project.
