We are proud of our busy Clinical Toxicology educational and consultation service with energetic and dynamic faculty members engaged in the care of poisoned patients at all levels. The Clinical Toxicology program’s mission is to improve the clinical management of patients suffering from poisoning and overdose. We serve a vulnerable and underrepresented patient population in urban, suburban, and rural Upstate New York. We believe training healthcare providers to enhance the clinical care of this patient population and disseminate specialty level knowledge is the most effective means of improving Toxicology practice on a larger scale.
Our mission is directly in line with that of the institution, which is to “improve the well-being of patients and communities by delivering innovative, compassionate, patient- and family-centered health care, enriched by education, science, and technology.”
Program Highlights
Medical Toxicology Consultation
We offer inpatient and outpatient consultation for the management of patients where there is concern for acute or chronic poisoning. Our inpatient consultation service at Strong Memorial and Highland Hospital is a blended Medical Toxicology and Addiction Medicine service staffed by board certified physicians supported by board certified clinical pharmacists. Referrals for outpatient clinic-based consultation must be made by a primary care physician. The clinic is located at the URMC Pittsford Urgent care at 3400 Monroe Ave., Rochester, NY 14618 and can be reached at (585) 275-5730. Providers can fax referrals to (585) 276-2436.
Medical Toxicology Education
We offer educational experiences for a broad range of trainees. Throughout the course of the year we house rotations for more than 50 learners from both medicine and pharmacy backgrounds ranging from students to fellows of various subspecialties.
Poison Center Experience
The URMC Medical Toxicology Fellowship program is fortunate to have a very close working relationship with the Upstate Poison Control Center. Our faculty and fellows field call for the Poison Center and we participate in many joint educational experiences. Together we work to disseminate specialty level knowledge about the management of poisoned patients, and improve the care provided to our community on the state and national scale.
