2nd Year Residents (PGY-3)
Dr. Abbas Smiley, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Abbas Smiley MD, PhD studied medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, and sport psychology and conducted both clinical practice and research continually. After getting his PhD in June 2019, he worked as an assistant professor at New York Medical College and as a research scientist at Westchester Medical Center. He mentored more than 40 medical students and research fellows to conduct research projects and publish peer-reviewed articles by applying various associated data analysis methods, such as semiparametric analysis, survival analysis, longitudinal modeling, classification and regression tree analysis, data mining, and meta-analysis, using R, SAS, and SPSS. Dr. Smiley was nominated for the “Rising Star Dean’s Faculty Award” by New York Medical College in Mar 2022.
Nicky Wu, M.D.
Nicky Wu, M.D., was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from York University in 2010, obtaining his Honors Bachelor in Biological Sciences. Afterwards, he was employed at Toronto Western Hospital's Epilepsy Genetics Program as a research assistant, where he became interested in neuroscience. He attended medical school at St. George's University, where he spent 2-years in Grenada completing my didactics and 2-years in Brooklyn, New York. He completed his internship training in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, followed by a 2-year of Neurology residency before deciding to pursue a career in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Many drivers of chronic diseases (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia) are preventable by addressing social determinants of health and lifestyle modifications, which led him to URMC's MPH program. As a General Preventive Medicine Resident, he plans to continue his public health studies to serve his community better.
Igor Oliveira, M.D.
Igor Oliveira, MD graduated from Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brazil) and had eight years of post-graduation experience in many fields of Medicine, including Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. His passion for Nutrition, Lifestyle Medicine, and Prevention started in 2020 when he was also certified as a Fitness Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Dr. Oliveira has a very entrepreneurial mind and has created the first and biggest mentorship training program in Brazil for physicians who want to practice Medicine in the United States, with hundreds of students approved in different specialties at the best programs in the country. Dr. Oliveira is known in social media as Igor Deoli and has been creating content related to prevention, exercise, and nutrition for over three years, with a total follower base of more than 30 thousand people across his platforms in Brazil, and has changed many lives. He believes one of the most meaningful ways of promoting health and practicing prevention is through social media, an area that still needs more attention from healthcare providers. He started producing content in English to fight misinformation and advise people on a broader scale. He also believes that training in Preventive Medicine, Lifesyle Medicine and graduating in his Masters in Public Health (MPH) will improve his abilities to keep innovating and make a positive difference in even more lives.
Benjamin Jeuk, M.D.
Before medical school, Dr. Jeuk’s interest in public health and preventive medicine was first sparked while volunteering as a teacher and observing in a rural hospital in Ghana. He studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich in Germany and was awarded magna cum laude for his thesis in the areas of immunology and inflammatory bowel diseases. He trained in Radiology and Internal Medicine in Germany before completing his Internal Medicine residency in the U.S. at Yale New Haven Health Bridgeport Hospital. After performing tuberculosis research at the CDC in Atlanta, he wanted to further pursue his interest in Preventive Medicine at the University of Rochester. His medical passions also include environmental health, global health, and population-based medicine. He enjoys being active in nature and photography in his free time.
1st Year Residents (PGY-2)
Miranda Chacon, M.D.
Miranda Chacon performed her undergraduate studies in Exercise Science at the University of Pittsburgh. She subsequently studied medicine at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, where she was an avid participant in the community, organizing events as president of the Pediatric Outreach Group for Students, the Community Garden, and founder of the Preventive Medicine Interest Group. She went on to complete two years of General Surgery residency and two years of research fellowship within the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Rochester before deciding to return to her core interests in prevention. Her professional interests include lifestyle management and the social determinants of health, specifically within maternal and pediatric populations. Outside of the medical field, Miranda enjoys spending time with her son, writing, painting, and getting outdoors.
Chris De los Reyes, D.O., MPH
Chris De Los Reyes graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. After working in research at the Salk Institute in California, he attended medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University. He completed his transitional year at Hackensack University Medical Center, Palisades. He then worked as a physician evaluator performing home health assessments for insurance companies. Seeing a diverse patient population in terms of age, rural and urban settings, as well as unique health needs helped to solidify his interest in a career in preventive medicine. In addition to general preventive medicine, future interests may include fellowships such as addiction medicine. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and exploring new places.
