Chief Resident Message

Welcome

Welcome to University of Rochester! We’re glad you have come to learn more about what makes UR such a special place to begin your journey to becoming an anesthesiologist.

Located in Western NY, we are a Level 1 Trauma, tertiary and quaternary referral center with a broad catchment area serving a wide variety of patients with unique, complex pathologies.  With an unrivaled clinical environment at Strong Memorial Hospital in which to train, this experience is further enhanced by our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment – including, but not limited to, a new dedicated orthopedic surgical center, the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and Sawgrass Surgical Center.

Our program takes pride in offering an integrated categorical anesthesia curriculum, distinguished by early orientation to the ORs allowing for PGY1s to apply anesthesia concepts during off-service internship rotations, and vice versa. We make continual efforts to further patient safety through research, various QI projects, and an ever-evolving residency program experience. Our residency program also offers academic tracks in parallel to residency that can culminate in MSc, MEd, and MMM degrees, allowing our residents the opportunity to develop the skills they need to facilitate their unique, future goals. Our program supports its residents to become the anesthesiologist of their dreams, be it a clinician-scientist, a medical educator, a hospital administrator, an academic society leader, a private practice perioperative consultant, or any other career path one can imagine.

It is more than just a great work environment that sets us apart from other programs. Western NY provides easy access to affordable and convenient housing, the experience of all four seasons, endless outdoor activities, freshwater Lake Ontario and Finger Lakes' beaches, various sporting and musical events, and vibrant craft beer, festival, and restaurant scenes. The department hosts various group activities, and residents frequently get together for concerts, running and cycling groups, wine tasting, brewery trips, trivia nights, board games, and BBQs. The nurturing environment and culture of looking out for one another develops friendships that last long beyond residency.

We genuinely believe that our experience here at UR has been everything we could have hoped for with a unique combination of a big city clinical experience and a hometown feel. We would gladly decide to train here if we were starting back in your shoes.

Thanks again for your interest in our program. Please feel free to reach out with questions or if you would like to hear more about what makes our program so special!

Sincerely,

Tony Choi, MD, Amanda Koonce, MD, and Remington Mark, DO
